About this event
Jamaica Gilmer opens a photographic exhibition on Black hair culture that presents stylists and barbers as artists and Black patrons as subjects. The Stone Center describes the show as a celebration of the long-held tradition of being immersed in images while you wait for your turn in the chair. The evening includes an opening reception and a talk by Gilmer, a multidisciplinary artist and the founder of The Beautiful Project, whose work in photography, ceramics, and film centers Black joy, community wisdom, and intergenerational storytelling.
